Robert Crosbie föddes i Montreal, Canada. Från tidig ålder var han djupt intresserad av religösa och filosofiska ämnen. Han flyttade till Boston 1886, och där besökte kan Teosofiska Samfundets möten. När W.Q. Judge kom dit för att hålla föredrag, blev han presenterad för Robert Crosbie och de skapade omedelbart ett vänskapsband och en tillit. Robert Crosbie blev elev till HPB genom korrespondans. Efter W.Q. Judges död blev Katherine Tingley förgrundsfigur. Hon etablerade ett samfund i Point Loma, Kalifornien. På hennes begäran anslöt sig sig Robert Crosbie till Point Loma gruppen. Han lämnade den efter några år. Han flyttade till södra Pasadena och startade där en studiegrupp.1909 blev denna grupp United Lodge of Theosophists (ULT). 1912 grundade han tidskriften Theosophy, som han fortsatte att vara redaktör för ända till sin död. Robert Crosbie betonade opersonlighet och anonymitet för att värna om arbetet och skydda medarbetarna från stolthet och ambition.

Robert Crosbie är älskad och hedrad i U.L.T. därför att han har uttänkt och utarbetat ett idealiskt sätt att fortsätta den Teosofiska Rörelsen, och detta i en period i vilken den löpte stor risk att stranda på persondyrkans, den personliga auktoritetens, urvattningens och förvirringens blindskär. Helena Blavatsky var en utomordentlig källa till inspiration, William Q. Judge ett föredömligt förkroppsligande av den. De som skulle komma att dricka djupa klunkar ur den källan och i Judge finna förebilden för ett sunt teosofiskt arbetssätt, skulle också komma att ge Rörelsen de bästa chanserna till en sund fortsättning. Rörelsens kvalitet beror hela tiden på kvaliteten hos dess medarbetare, på dessas motiv, utgångspunkter, utbildning och mål. Genom att vara "lojal mot den Teosofiska Rörelsens stora Grundare", med tonvikten på det väsentligaste i teosofin, och genom att fästa mindre uppmärksamhet vid "tvistefrågor och olikheter i personliga åsikter", lade Crosbie grunden till sunt, värdefullt och varaktigt arbete. This little book is intended to serve as a guide to the mother who wishes to teach her children the basic facts of life, the purpose of life, and the laws of living it. While many books for children have been written with these Theosophical ideas in mind, the principles have been often so obscured by story and diversion, that no clear ideas have been gained. In this book, the principles are insisted on to the exclusion of story interest, with the idea that each mother in her own way, and according to the nature of her child, may impart – maybe learn at the same time – the teaching more clearly and comprehensively than any other mother could possibly impart it. The work is in reality for the mother the principles here given are undiluted Theosophy as written down by H.P.Blavatsky; the applications in many instances as taught by her colleague, Wm. Q. Judge, and further passed on by one who followed in their footsteps, - in gratitude to each of whom this little book is written by A Student. (Edited by Robert Crosbie (1849-1919)

The Ocean of Theosophy, written by Mr. Judge, was regarded by Mr. Crosbie as the perfect condensation of H.P.B.’s great work, The Secret Doctrine, and therefore the best possible book to put in the hands of students. During the life-time of Mr. Crosbie a study class in the Ocean was inaugurated for the education of the earnest-minded in the fundamental teachings of Theosophy. A portion of each session was devoted to questions and answers, which were preserved in stenographic records.Selections from the questions asked and the replies made were published in the magazine THEOSOPHY after Mr. Crosbie’s death in 1919. Since then study classes in the Ocean have been maintained in the various U.L.T. Lodges year after year, and much use has been made of Mr. Crosbie’s answers, as each new student necessarily faces much the same problems. Repeated requests for the issuance in book form of these valuable materials have inspired the present publication.

This book, then, is no biography or autobiography written and uttered for the greater glory of a mortal man, but rather is an introduction to the only life worth living, whether reflected in the small or in the great—the life of the Soul. Its speech is in the language of the Soul; its utterance is that of the Doctrine of the Heart; its purpose is the furtherance of that Cause in which was hid the mortal existence of Robert Crosbie no less than the earthly careers of those great Captains whom he revered and under whom he served: H. P. Blavatsky and Wm. Q. Judge.“That power which the Disciple shall covet is that which shall make him appear as nothing in the eyes of men.” This was the power which Robert Crosbie gained, this the power that enabled him to keep in touch with the great Teachers after They had cast off the mortal coil; that guided his steps in following the Path They showed, the MASTERS who are behind; that sustained him during the long years when all that could be done was “to work, watch—and wait,” until the propitious hour should come when, under Karma, recruits might be gathered from among the generation following the great Mission and the great Message of his Teachers.
