Nr 100 – ISIS UNVEILED
This book, totaling more than 1300 pages in two volumes, was
the first to issue from the pen of H.P.B., published in 1877. Isis
Unveiled unites a historical review of religious and scientific ideas
with the spirit of the quest for truth. Of special interest to the West is
the investigation of the origins of Christianity, including exhaustive
study of the teachings of the gnostic sects of the first centuries, and an
explanation of the mystery of Jesus. The first truly scientific account of
the vast subject of "Magic" is offered in this work, which has for its
sub-title: "A Master-Key to the Mysteries of Ancient and Modern Science
and Theology."

THE SECRET DOCTRINE
In 1888, eleven years
after the appearance of Isis Unveiled, H.P.B. completed and published The
Secret Doctrine - "The Synthesis of Science, Religion and Philosophy."
The systematic character of this work is revealed by the subjects treated at
length in its pages: Cosmogenesis, Cosmic Evolution, Anthropogenesis, the
Evolution of Symbolism, the Archaic Symbolism of the World-Religions,
Science and the Secret Doctrine Contrasted. The Secret Doctrine
differs from Isis in that it deliberately unfolds a specific teaching about
the nature of things. In the Introductory pages of Volume I, H.P. Blavatsky
wrote: The Secret Doctrine is not a treatise, or a series of vague theories,
but contains all that can be given out to the world in this century." The
Secret Doctrine is, therefore, the basic source of the Theosophical
teachings in this cycle.

THE KEY TO THEOSOPHY
Designed by H.P.B. to afford a general
perspective on the Theosophical teaching - and on the Theosophical Movement.
In respect to the latter, the Key is an invaluable reference text
(310 pages). The Key was published in 1889, to trace, as its author
said, the broad outlines of the Wisdom Religion. This book is in the form of
questions and answers - a dialogue between an Inquirer and a Theosophist -
explaining fundamental principles, and meeting, at the same time, the
various objections raised by the average Western inquirer. Unfamiliar
concepts are presented in clear language, and as simply as possible.
The Key is especially valuable for its extended discussion of what
happens after death and for the analysis of man's psychological nature.

THE OCEAN OF THEOSOPHY
The need for a simple, concise statement of Theosophical teachings was met
by Mr. Judge with publication of this book in 1893. It first appeared as a
series of newspaper articles, in which the writer set forth all the major
doctrines of the philosophy, dealing with questions that might naturally
occur to the average reader. Years of experience in the use of the Ocean
as a text in Theosophical study classes have proved it a provocative
approach to the Theosophical philosophy as a whole. It has 153 pages.

LETTERS THAT HAVE HELPED ME
(Am. ULT edition)
In the early days of the Theosophical Movement in the United
States, Mr. Judge was in intimate contact with American students, with whom
he maintained a large correspondence. Letters That Have Helped Me is
a compilation of his counsels. Mr. Judge's wise and gentle words are a
revelation of his understanding of the subtleties of human nature, and of
the great depth and strength of heart he possessed as a teacher and a
friend.
Part II is comprised of letters to students and Theosophical groups, and
various extracts. In this edition of Letters That Have Helped Me,
issued 50 years after the passing of Mr. Judge, a third section presents
additional material, including a group of allegorical stories contributed by
Mr. Judge to the Path.

THE SCOPE OF REINCARNATION
by William Q. Judge. In the 1980's a Theosophical
student - with many years of experience in presenting the ideas of Theosophy
- concieved that it would be helpful to select a subset of the material from
Judge's The Ocean of Theosophy and rearrange it to be focused
around the topic of reincarnation. This book, published in 1987, is the
result. It makes a very coherent introduction to much occult knowledge,
wrapping it around the process of reincarnation. It includes a detailed
presentation of information on the soul. The book's publisher notes:
In the terms of Mr. Judge, Reincarnation
becomes considerably more than an intriguing metaphysical idea, attractive
chiefly for its suggestion of a glamorous past and a romantic future.
Instead, it now appears as a conception of life bringing profound meaning to
our feelings about the dignity of man, leading to long thoughts concerning
both the responsibilites and the potentialities of all human beings.

wrote to the Theosophical Movement during 1941 and 1942. In this
series of articles the philosphical background of the Grihasta Ashrama
is presented and the moral principles which are its logical corollaries are

instruction to improve the moral texture of their lives and contribute to

THUS HAVE I HEARD
Was the title which
Mr. B.P. Wadia chose for the series of essays he contributed to the Aryan
Path which he founded and edited from 1930 to 1958 till he died.
In these illuminating articles Mr. Wadia repeats the great truths of ancient
Wisdom with a view to awaken an intelligence appreciation of the hoary past
so that an intelligent adaptation of the same old truths to modern life and
conditions may take place. The essays treat of the true value and meaning of
festivals, roots of social problems and the best means of social reform, of
the perplexities of our modern situation and human condition.

tidskriften Theosophy. Senare (omkring 1930) startade han
tidskrifterna The Aryan Path och The Theosophical Movement, av
vilka den senare fortfarande ges ut från Bombay varje månad.
Robert Crosbie
instiftade den allra första U.L.T.-Logen och B.P. Wadia förde ut U.L.T. i
världen. Han grundade den första indiska U.L.T.-Logen i Bombay samt flera
andra Loger i Indien, Europa och Amerika. I Bangalore instiftade han
dessutom The Indian Institute of World Culture. B.P. Wadia verkade
också politiskt och startade Indiens första fackförening och tog aktiv del i
Indiens självstyre.

REINCARNATION: THE PHOENIX FIRE MYSTERY
Head/Cranston
by Joseph Head and Sylvia Cranston. The
premier anthology of reincarnation beliefs around the world and over time.
Plus commentary. (This book has, in recent editions, actually been the work
of Cranston.) This most recent edition of 1991 has still more material added
to the previous version. Here are some well earned quotes on the previous
version:
- "Presents writing from people as
different as J. D. Salinger and Paul Tillich, G.B. Shaw and St. Augustine.
In these days when religious ideas of the East are being re-explored in
the West, such an anthology should find wide use."
The Christian Century
- "I read every page of this
magnificent book. It is a superb piece of work. Easily the finest and most
comprehensive on this subject." Rev. D. Leslie D. Weatherhead, former
President of the Methodist Conference of Great Britain;
Ministries Emeritus, City Temple, London
- "Deals with a fascinating idea in
a fascinating way. What makes it particularly unique is that it is useful
to both the scholar and the layman." Emil Lengyel,
Chairman of Department of Social Sciences, Fairleigh Dickinson University
- "Will open the eyes of many
people who dismissed the rebirth theory as something oriental."
Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, philosopher; former President of
India
- "Such is the wealth of material
contained in this book that the reader may well conclude that all the
great thinkers of mankind have been reincarnationists, and indeed such a
judgement would not be far from the truth." Rev.
John Andrew Storey, The Middle Way (leading Buddhist magazine)
- "A wonderful book. I am a great
admirer of the diligence, erudition, and good taste of the authors."
Dr. Karl Menninger, psychiatrist
- "Extraordinary eloquence.
Fascinating and moving to read. Filled with encouragement. A massive
gathering from science, psychology, philosophy, and from the religions of
both East and West." Robert Kirsch, Los Angeles
Times
- "An invitation to an inward
journey. The book is not a polemic but rather an invitation to an inward
journey. No other single source approaches this in scope of contents."
Choice magazing (American Library Association)
- "A splendid book. Would be marvelous if
more and more people became aware that there are many lives to live in
order to learn all the lessons." Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross,
psychiatrist
As
the tide of interest in metaphysical and Eastern teachings grows, a
spontaneous turning to reincarnation has seemed to result, providing a
continuing harvest of human expression on this great subject.
